Where are gods morals here?

We hear it from christians all the time. “Without god, there are no morals.” “We can only get morals from god.” “God is the absolute authority on morality” “Atheist have no morals.” “Atheist are just baby killers!”

Ok, maybe that last one isn’t exactly one I’ve heard directly, but I’m sure that a lot of christians think that. Well, now I can say the same about god himself. And “his own word” is all the proof I need.

Today I was reading 2 Samuel where David sees the desirable Bathsheba naked and bathing from his rooftop on to hers. Bathsheba is married to a man named Uriah. David sends for her, has sex with her and impregnates her. David freaks out and sends for Uriah to himself away from a current battle taking place. He tries to set up Uriah with a perfect opportunity to spend some hanky panky time with Bathsheba. That way it will seem like it was Uriah that gets her pregnant instead. But Uriah is to honorable of a man and can not sleep with his wife while his fellow soldiers are sleeping in the dirt at the battle field. David then tries to get him drunk, hoping Uriah with sleep with his wife then, to no avail.

Then David sends Uriah to the front lines where he is then killed.

The bible then says that “what David had done displeased the Lord.” Its not clear if all of it displeased, or just him sleeping with another mans wife, getting Uriah killed… Who knows what upset god here.

Later in 2 Samuel 12:13 David admits he has sinned against god. But Nathan says in the same verse that god has taken away Davids sin. However in verse 14 Nathan informs David that the son that Bathsheba is about to give birth to will die because of his sin.

Verse 15 says “the lord struck the child and he became ill.” Verse 18 the child dies.

Now then, I understand that not a single man is perfect. Men will do stupid things like act out sexually. Which is what David did. Yes it was wrong and consequences should be expected for David. Even Bathsheba should expect them. I guess back then that would include being stoned to death for her.

But this whole passage just seems to skim over the innocent baby. The baby that god himself kills.

What did the baby do? What did he do to deserve a death sentence given by god? God killed this baby. Not David, not Bathsheba. God is the murderer of innocence.

Today we have christians going on about people killing fetuses in abortions, but why don’t they go on about god himself killing a baby after birth? Where is the outrage and outcries? Where are the questions towards god from believers. And please don’t tell me, “well god did it, so its ok.”

It is something to find out that the god of the bible is really the baby killer.

Is god like Hitler?

I have recently been reading in scripture about some of the ways that god himself gives the command to kill all who decide not to follow his rules. It was quite disturbing to think that an all powerful god would order the killing of so many. I mean, isn’t eternal punishment enough for the abbreviated lives we have here on earth? Are we really to be punished eternally for the short 50-80 years most of us live? (Maybe that’s another blog topic.)

One evening while reading some of these horrible stories of mass killings either ordered by, or in the name of this “supreme” being, I was  reminded of Hitler. Quite the ruthless murderer himself, killing all who got in his way and all who didn’t go along with his supreme race idea. I’m sorry, but when I read these stories in the bible, I think the same of a god who specifically says, “kill and destroy” whole nations of people.

Below are a few sample passages.

1 Samuel 15:3.
“Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.”

Although all of it’s bad, the women and infant parts are what really jump out at me here. And god orders the slayings! The question that rises is, (Is there ever a good reason to kill infants?) I guess according to god…yes. Seems sick to me, but I’m sure a follower of this (all loving) god would have some reasons to justify it. But justifying killing infants? No thanks. That simply isn’t believable to me. On the contrary, quite unbelievable.

Another instance where god sees fit to kill women and infants is:
Ezekiel 9:5-6 NIV
“As I listened, he said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity or compassion. Slaughter the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark.”

Again, god ordering those who are not in the club to be killed. Yes, I understand that in this context that the people ordered killed were the enemy of those doing the killing. But for a god to specifically order the killing of young ones… It just seems tyrannical to me.  And it is said that god is against killing unborn children, when he used to order the killing of infants already alive and breathing. Again, it is not believable that an all loving god would do such a thing.

And another lovely piece of work.
Isaiah 13:11
“I will punish the world for its evil.” (An evil that god himself created. Isaiah 45:7)

Isaiah 13:15-18
“Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children.”

So much for an all “loving” and “merciful” god. Once again he condones murder and rape. The list goes on and on.

I guess the thought of Hitler came to me when thinking about these scriptures. It seems that he was doing the same type of actions. Just kill anyone not in line with his ideals. But the idea of sending people, (who simply don’t believe in such an elusive god) to hell for all eternity….to send them to a permanent lake of fire, seems far worse than what Hitler did. It seems the cards are stacked against those who don’t simply take things on faith. Those who really want to be honest with themselves and question if such a god even exists.

Did god really create us with these wonderful minds? Did god create our brains and give us thoughts that genuinely want to know the truth about life? Did god not want us to think critically? Then why play so hard to get? Why be so mysterious to those you call your “children?” I think I know. Its because no such being really exists. How can such an omnipotent being refuse to answer when one of its creations ask honest questions? I guess unless you just live on faith, then that question has been answered already. He’s not there.

So, with so many scriptures about killing people who don’t fit in with the god gang, I just picture god like Hitler. Ready to kill anyone who goes against or questions the ideals of their perfect world. Kill em all. The men, women and children. Because they aren’t one of us. Make them keep their mouths shut, don’t think and just believe it. Or burn for ever and ever.

Yeah, that’s a good loving god. I will for  sure have more on the subject of murder in the bible. There is so much of it. Until next time,
